The U.S. Department of Transportation imposed a substantial $140 million fine on Southwest Airlines for breaches of consumer protection laws during the 2022 Christmas period. This unprecedented fine, dwarfing any previous penalties by 30 times, is on top of the over $600 million in refunds and reimbursements that the DOT ensured Southwest provided its passengers.
